
Mathematica is usually Blub to these people, dismissed as being used only for "symbolic math," equation solving, integration, etc. I have never, not once, met anyone with a negative opinion of Mathematica's technical merit that has actually used it.

Because I understand and even agree with some of the arguments, but not all of them. I often wonder if I am a mathematician who happens to also be a reasonably competent computer scientist, or a computer scientist whose software development is typically very math-heavy. I admit I have conflicting feelings about it myself, despite the fact that if anyone would be classified as an advocate for it in my work environment it would be me. I see a lot of interesting polarized debate here about Mathematica, both about its closed source, and its technical merit.
